MADISON, Wis. -- A longtime Madison varsity basketball coach is speaking out about his resignation.
VIDEO: Watch The ReportBoyce Hodge said he was forced to resign as coach of Madison West High School earlier this week.Hodge said the district told him it would not renew his contract because he did not comply with the district's disciplinary rules when he was ejected from a basketball game back in January. But the former West grad and coach of the Regents for the past 11 years said his resignation is the result of administrative resentment towards some of his past comments."(The resignation was) involuntary. It was a forced choice that I had to make," Hodge said.Hodge said the forced resignation is the district's retaliation for his testimony during an arbitration dispute back when he was fighting for his job as athletic director, a position he ultimately lost."When I provided some key testimony, there was going to be some reaction to that. I just didn't know when it was going to occur," Hodge said.Hodge said he testified about how the school district advised him on how to deal with non-renewing contracts."So I was much a part of that process, in dealing with coaches that I had to oversee," Hodge said. "I know how this school district works, and they would rather there not be a union in place and if they had an issue with that employee, they would just get rid of that employee."It's the same way that Hodge claims the district dealt with his own coach's position. He said there is a vindictive nature to the whole process."So that sometimes the reasoning behind the decision to either discipline or non-renew an employee is somewhat arbitrary," Hodge said.Officials from the teachers union said that the process in which Hodge was asked to resign is questionable."They forced him into resignation, so that smells in it of itself. But the fact that they did not provide him with his statutory rights to union representation of that meeting, that means it really didn't occur under the statutes," said John Matthews, executive director of Madison Teachers Inc. "If you're going to have good labor relations, you got to get past the cavalier attitude that seems to exist at the school district."The Madison Metropolitan School District confirmed Hodge's resignation but officials said they can't comment on "personnel matters."Hodge said he plans to contest his coaching resignation. He said he is talking with the teachers union about filing an unfair labor practice complaint.Hodge and the teachers union are also waiting to hear more on the arbitration hearing regarding his job as the athletic director at Madison West High School. For now, he'll remain serving as the school's minority services coordinator.
