U Of M Official Withdraws Candidacy For UW-Madison Chancellor

Regents Committee Met This Week

UPDATED: 5:31 pm CDT May 27, 2008

One of four finalists to be the next University of Wisconsin-Madison chancellor has withdrawn his name from consideration.

University of Minnesota Vice President for Research Timothy Mulcahy said that he notified the regents selection committee of his "difficult decision" last week. He said that his personal and professional interests led him to decide to stay in Minnesota.

UW System spokesman David Giroux said that Mulcahy is the only one of the four to drop out of the running to replace UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley.

Giroux says the regents committee met Tuesday with System President Kevin Reilly to try to come to a consensus.

He said that he can't release any more information until a candidate accepts the system's offer.
