More Than 200 Attend Meeting On Moving Gays Mills

Board Member Says Decision Could Go To Referendum

UPDATED: 1:27 pm CDT June 18, 2008

Gays Mills residents are talking about moving the town after it flooded for a second time in 10 months.

More than 200 people attended a meeting on Tuesday to talk about moving the town of 625 and its business district to higher ground. The Crawford County community's downtown is prone to flooding, WISC-TV reported.

Some attendees wore muddy sneakers and work boots -- evidence of cleanup already begun.

But Steve Mickelson said that he won't be in business if his meat market floods again. He and other business owners complained there was no help to rebuild except federal loans they can't afford.

Fred Schlegel said that he hasn't been able to return to his home since it flooded in August.

Gays Mills Village Board member Pat Brockway said that the issue is likely to go to a referendum.

Last year, Gays Mills was inundated with water from the Kickapoo River.
