He said he is excited to get to know the community and to continue to improve the school district.

"There will be new things that we eventually focus on, but I want that to be a part of an ongoing interaction process -- learning from principals, listening to other people, parents who have a say in the school district. And from there we will form our direction together," Nerad said.

Nerad brings seven years of experience to Madison. He previously served as superintendent of Green Bay schools.

Art Rainwater retired Monday after 14 years as superintendent of the Madison Metropolitan School District.
