MADISON, Wis. -- Seven downtown liquor stores and one grocery store are working with the University of Wisconsin-Madison in a pilot project to fight underage drinking.
VIDEO: Watch The ReportElectronic identification scanners have been donated by the UW to help store clerks check to make sure customers are of legal age to buy alcohol or tobacco. By swiping a driver's license or state ID, the clerk can get immediate feedback on whether it's authentic, WISC-TV reported."People do scan by looking at the IDs, but the IDs are becoming much more sophisticated and simply scanning really doesn't catch them anymore. And this tool, this technology, really will help to really find the fake IDs that are out there," said Dawn Crim, a UW assistant to the chancellor. The pilot program is funded by contributions of the UW police and chancellor's office."Let's face it. Wisconsin is a drinking state," said Crim. "It has a high-risk drinking culture and this is one way we can focus on health and safety on campus and in our community."The Madison Mallards baseball team is adding a scanner to their stadium and more than 100 fake IDs have already been confiscated at the UW's Memorial Union, WISC-TV reported.
