Doyle Interviewed UW-Madison Chancellor Finalists

Spokesman Says Doyle Didn't Make Formal Recommendation

UPDATED: 3:38 pm CDT July 28, 2008

Gov. Jim Doyle's calendar shows that he interviewed the four finalists for the University of Wisconsin-Madison chancellor job in May.

A regent said the governor did not have any influence in the selection of Biddy Martin as the next leader of the state's flagship university. Still, one Republican aide said the governor's involvement was inappropriate.

The governor had the phone conversations on May 19, two days before a Board of Regents committee began meeting to select Chancellor John Wiley's replacement.

The committee and University of Wisconsin System President Kevin Reilly announced they had selected Martin, the provost at Cornell University, on May 28.

Doyle spokesman Lee Sensenbrenner said the governor passed on his thoughts about the candidates to the regents but did not make a formal recommendation.
