Daniel Nerad visited with families at the east side farmers market in Madison. He said his strategy is to reach out to people, WISC-TV reported.

"There's that distance - - you know between - - you know - - the people that have children and that formal office called the superintendents' office and I want to work to break that down and to reach out and listen to people where they are," said Nerad.

Nerad started with the district at the start of July, taking over for the retired Art Rainwater.

Nerad was superintendent of Green Bay schools.
