New UW Chancellor Welcomes Students

Martin Spoke To Freshman Friday

UPDATED: 6:28 pm CDT August 29, 2008

The University of Wisconsin-Madison's new chancellor hasn't officially started yet but she has already begun to take the lead.

Dr. Carolyn "Biddy" Martin made her first address to the campus body Friday.

She spoke before nearly 4,500 incoming freshmen and welcomed them to campus.

"You're beginning a great adventure and the first thing I want to do is congratulate you for being here," said Martin. "It's a highly selective institution, as you know. And you're to be congratulated for the talents and achievements that made you admissible to the University of Wisconsin -Madison."

Martin started her speech Friday afternoon with a moment of silence to remember the three Madison students who were killed in a car crash earlier this week.
