In the state's largest school district, 80,000 Milwaukee Public School students are heading back to the classroom. Many parochial and year-round schools opened before the Labor Day weekend.

Students also began classes Tuesday at Madison's new Olson Elementary School on the city's West Side.

The school was approved in a referendum two years ago to help with overcrowding at other schools. It is the first new school to open in the district since 2001.

Gov. Jim Doyle and his wife, Jessica, were at Hawthorne Elementary School in Madison Tuesday morning to welcome students back to school.

Throughout the week, Doyle is visiting elementary students in Madison, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Wausau, La Crosse and Eau Claire.
