MADISON, Wis. -- The city of Madison is turning its eco-friendly roundup of computer parts into a year-round effort.

The final, biyearly computer recycling roundup ended last week, with more than 126,000 pounds of computers, televisions and electronics collected. The roundup has been held every six months for the past 15 years, WISC-TV reported.

But it's ending to make way for a year-round recycling program. People can drop off their old computers, TVs and other electronic goods at two sites beginning on Jan. 1.

City recycling coordinator George Dreckmann said that it's important to recycle computer equipment because it contains mercury and cadmium.

He said more than 1 million pounds of electronics have been collected in the past seven years, WISC-TV reported.
