La Follette High School Students Work To Build 'Green' House

Open House Set For Jan. 27

UPDATED: 1:23 pm CST January 17, 2008

Students in La Follette High School's building trades class are going green.

Those in the class will have the chance to spend their fall semester out of the classroom and building a house, officials said.

However, the project isn't to build just any house. For the last seven years, the building trades class has been constructing "green-built" homes, WISC-TV reported.

The students use recycled materials for things like the wood flooring and insulation.

Instructor Steve Munson said that the project offers valuable experience to the students.

"We try to work towards the initiative building a good house for exposure and exposure on kids and getting some experience on new initiatives," Munson said. "And hopefully, those kids carry some of those initiatives onto their jobs, whether (they're) going to tech schools, college or possibly off into the world of work right out of high school."

The house is on Tarragon Drive, WISC-TV reported.

An open house is scheduled for the home on Jan. 27 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
