Governor Announces $24M Cleanup Of Milwaukee River
State To Provide 80 Percent Of Costs

MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee river will be getting a major cleanup.Gov. Jim Doyle on Wednesday announced a $24.4 million project to clean contaminated sediment from the Kinnickinnic River.More than $14 million will come from the Great Lakes Legacy Fund, which provides federal money to clean Great Lakes waterways.Another $7.7 million has already been earmarked for the project in the current state budget. The city of Milwaukee also is contributing.
Doyle said that the state also will help pay for improvements at the Port of Milwaukee. The project involves dredging as well as installing a dockwall and tieback system.The state will provide $480,000, or 80 percent, of the $600,000 cost, with the city providing the rest.
