WINDSOR, Wis. -- Going green isn't reserved for small cars these days.

In September, the first-ever hybrid trucks will be available to the public.

The company, Kenworth, based in Washington state will sell the vehicles.

There is a Kenworth store in Windsor.

Like hybrid cars, the trailers come with a fuel engine but run on an electric generator that powers the truck's batteries.

The hybrids are designed to deliver anything from furniture to beer.

The hybrid models cost $35,000 to $40,000 more than a regular diesel truck, but Kenworth officials said the money is earned back quickly in energy savings.

"We're the first ones to have it out in the industry and we're thinking green now," said Wisconsin Kenworth vice-president Dennis Petske. "For our customers, diesel is over $4 a gallon, so they can recognize some significant savings,"

During a demonstration in Milwaukee, Kenworth said the hybrid truck offered a weekly savings of around $253, adding up to more than $13,000 a year.
