MADISON, Wis. -- Union leaders and environmentalists came together this weekend in Madison with the goal of improving the environment by adding eco-friendly jobs. The idea that Wisconsin can add 37,000 new jobs by gaining a profitable and clean energy economy has many people and organizations rallying for these so-called "green" jobs."We'd like to see an investment in renewable energies and the green economy," said Chuck Geiger, organizer of the Blue Green Alliance. It's this message that has union members and environmentalists rallying together.
A new study, commissioned by the progressive think-tank The Center for American Progress, indicates that a $100 billion investment in energy-efficient strategies would create two million jobs nationwide within two years, with 37,000 of those jobs landing in Wisconsin."You look at Wisconsin and the jobs we've lost in the last few years," said Geiger. "These people need some place to work, and they have job skills that can be applied to these green jobs."Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk said one solution involves helping farmers get rid of cow manure by using it to fuel a power plant."With a manure digester," said Falk, "not only can we eliminate the manure from our lakes and streams, but farmers then have an environmentally friendly sound way to get rid of their manure."The Green Jobs for America campaign is working with several environmental organizations, like the Sierra Club and the Blue Green Alliance. For more information, go to greenjobsforamerica.org.
