MADISON, Wis. -- Back to school time usually means buying school supplies and new clothes, but this year some students may also be required to roll up their sleeves for a new immunization.
VIDEO: Watch The ReportThe Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services reminds families that the student immunization law has added two new requirements this year.Students entering sixth, ninth and 12th grades will need to get a T-DAP booster shot for whooping cough.Students entering kindergarten, sixth and 12th grades will also need a chicken pox booster shot."These are things that were always recommended and should be done," said Dean Pediatrician Dr. Conrad Andringa. "We're now requiring them because we have a better chance of getting more kids into the doctor's office, into the immunizations clinics so that they get the immunizations."All children attending a licensed day care will also need a vaccine to help prevent pneumonia, meningitis and some ear infections."The more things that we can prevent them from getting the better off we are," said Lisa Knudson with Kids Express Learning Center. "So if the kids have the vaccinations that keep them safe, it also keeps other kids safe from those diseases that we can prevent."For more information on immunizations, visit this Web site.
