Toddy Glotz has been a Maywood School Room 47 "Grandma" for 14 years.
"Toddy presents a different and interesting lesson to my second-grade students for one half-hour each Friday. Then she stays to do research with them or helps with special projects for another half-hour.
She tells stories, presents information, shares things about her childhood, sings, makes puppets and kazoos, dresses as Raggedy Ann and makes each student a pillow with their name in block letters stitched on it.
The retired Lakewood Elementary School librarian loves each student as much as she would her own child and she enriches their lives immensely. She is the only grandma who some of them have contact with.
She also spent the last 13 years volunteering in the Maywood Library on Fridays, repairing books, shelving books, bar-coded books and updated the card catalogue.
She has also volunteered at the Bethel Lutheran Church library and the church's "Extra Years of Zest" group. Toddy and her husband drive neighbors to doctor appointments and assists them with other errands.
She is always full of positive energy -- and it's contagious. She truly makes a difference to everyone around her."
She was nominated by Barbara Trapp.

JEFFERSON AWARD
In 1972, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft Jr. and Sam Beard founded the American Institute for Public Service. Their mission: to encourage individuals for their achievements and contributions through public and community service. By recognizing the work of volunteers through the Jefferson Awards, the Institute believes in can encourage others to get involved in their communities, and to discover inspiration in ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Each of our Hometown Heroes will receive a bronze Jefferson Awards medal for public service. And each year, one Hometown Hero will be chosen to travel to Washington, D.C., where their selfless devotion to public service will be recognized at the Jefferson Awards National Ceremony. If you know of someone whose spirit of volunteering benefits their community, please nominate them by clicking here.
