October 2002 Volunteer: Jerry Baryenbruch

"Jerry Baryenbruch's business' Hometown Supermarket has been giving out scholarships since 1980. He regularly gives to the Spring Green Food Pantry and donates money and supplied to many groups and organizations from the American Players Theatre to local school groups.

Jerry says, 'I don't want to just live in a community, I want to be a part of it.

Jerry has been an Emergency Medical Technician for about 44 years. He was on the initiators of the Spring Green Rescue Squad.

Jerry was Rescue Captain with the Spring Green Fire Department until 2000, when his son took over the duties. He was Ambulance Chief in Spring Green from the first time they purchased an ambulance in 1971 to just a few months ago.

Jerry has also been a Lions member for over 30 years. He was part of an organization that has done everything from pay for and install park equipment to get a defibrillator for the community of Spring Green for the first time.

He is in charge of the Lions food stands for ball tournaments and the annual Spring Green Art Fair."

Their mission: to encourage individuals for their achievements and contributions through public and community service. By recognizing the work of volunteers through the Jefferson Awards, the Institute believes in can encourage others to get involved in their communities, and to discover inspiration in ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Each of our Hometown Heroes will receive a bronze Jefferson Awards medal for public service. And each year, one Hometown Hero will be chosen to travel to Washington, D.C., where their selfless devotion to public service will be recognized at the Jefferson Awards National Ceremony.
