Eleven-year-old Amy Kortbein of Lavelle, WI, kicked off 2003 by becoming a "friendly visitor" volunteer at the Edward Snyder Nursing Home in Reedsburg. She's making a difference in the lives of others by giving her energy and enthusiasm to visit the Home's residents. Amy visits whenever she can, volunteering her time to play games and exchange stories. Her frequent visits are rewarding for her and something special for the residents and staff.We all have that energy that can make a difference. The personal energy of volunteering touches lives and enriches our communities.
JEFFERSON AWARD
In 1972, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft Jr. and Sam Beard founded the American Institute for Public Service. Their mission: to encourage individuals for their achievements and contributions through public and community service. By recognizing the work of volunteers through the Jefferson Awards, the Institute believes in can encourage others to get involved in their communities, and to discover inspiration in ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Each of our Hometown Heroes will receive a bronze Jefferson Awards medal for public service. And each year, one Hometown Hero will be chosen to travel to Washington, D.C., where their selfless devotion to public service will be recognized at the Jefferson Awards National Ceremony.
