"It's nice to hear that other people realize the type of community Mount Horeb is."Madison Magazine writer and suburbs survey coordinator said the top three suburbs are Mount Horeb, with Cross Plains and Waunakee coming in tied at No. 2."How do you describe Mount Horeb?" said Buechner. "Mount Horeb is a small community, getting bigger but I don't think it's losing its small community feeling."The feeling of Mount Horeb is "neighborly," WISC-TV reported."Everybody's friendly here, just a nice place to be and to visit," said Buechner. The city has just over 6,500 residents but it doesn't mean people won't see a tractor in traffic every now and then."Because it does stand out," said Buechner. "That's why it's more of a hometown atmosphere and everybody loves being here because of what Mount Horeb is and what it does for people. How everybody feels in this community"The survey ranked communities surrounding Madison and considered housing cost, appreciation, low crime, property taxes, government services, schools, police and fire, parks and culture.A total of 21 communities were ranked in the survey. Those finishing at the bottom were Fitchburg and Mazomanie. However, only 81 points separate the top, Mount Horeb, from the bottom, Mazomanie. This is the fourth time for Madison Magazine's exclusive survey and the winners are always different. In 1999, it was Middleton coming in at top of the list and this year Middleton came in at No. 3. Belleville sits at 14 this year but was the 2002 champion. The community of Shorewood Hills was tops in 2004 but comes in at No. 4 this time around. The exclusive survey "Rating the Suburbs" is in the August issue of Madison magazine, available on newsstands Thursday. To view the rankings, visit Madison Magazine's Web site.
