Oscar Mayer To Lay Off 19 Office Workers

Company Officials Say No Plant Workers Will Be Affected

UPDATED: 3:42 pm CDT October 6, 2008

Nineteen office workers at the Oscar Mayer facility in Madison will lose their jobs next month as part of a companywide workforce reduction at Kraft Foods.

The layoffs will occur in November and company officials said that they're trying to manage the layoffs through attrition.

Officials said that there are 1,600 workers at the Madison plant and that no hourly plant workers will be affected. They said that they will continue to add plant workers because of increases in production of their hot dog and cold cut lines.

Those losing their jobs will receive severance packages and job placement, company officials said.

Oscar Mayer spokesman Syd Lindner said that employees were being told on Monday. He said that the layoffs are the company's attempt to deal with the economic turmoil around the country.

"We’re navigating an extremely challenging economic environment. Our input costs are at unprecedented levels and show no signs of diminishing. While Kraft is doing well – we are not where we need to be," Lindner said. "We’ve implemented other cost-saving measures, but at this point, we needed to look at positions as well."
