According to a news release from his office, Cieslewicz presented his budget at a fire station to underscore the fact that, despite the tough budget environment, he is keeping a commitment he made two years ago to add another paramedic unit. The budget includes funding to hire and train firefighters to staff a new ambulance on the west side beginning in 2010, as well open Station No.12 in 2009.

"In a time of soaring fuel costs and a troubled economy, this budget meets my goals of keeping taxes on the average home to an increase well below the rate of inflation and of protecting and even enhancing basic services," Cieslewicz said.

The 2009 budget increases taxes on the average home by 2.95 percent according to the news release.

Under the new budget, 20 positions would be cut from administrative to streets positions but the mayor said most positions are currently empty. Only seven employees would be impacted and that number could go down as well, WISC-TV reported.

"Our challenge is to do t his without impacting basic services and if we have patience we will get through this and stronger," said Cieslewicz.

He took out a total of $1.3 million from different agencies.

The budget will now be presented to the Common Council for review and will be voted on Nov. 10.
