NORTH FREEDOM, Wis. -- Flooding from this summer is continuing to affect a popular destination in the small Sauk County community of North Freedom.Things still aren't back to normal at the Mid-Continent Railway Museum in North Freedom."It has been a huge letdown for our operation our members," said railway manager Don Meyer. The museum is cancelling its annual Autumn Colors and Pumpkin Special train rides. Museum volunteers are instead restoring flood-damaged engines."The big problem for us is that the diesels, which have the electric motors around the axels, all went under water," said Meyer.Sun Prairie resident Mary Headington said her family misses the train rides."(The train ride is) something that the kids would enjoy to ride on. It would have been fun for them to do on a nice fall weekend," Headington said.Headington said the family is taking a surprise train ride through the Baraboo River Valley.Meyer said that cancelling the October events might cost the museum about $250,000 in losses.Meyer said the Santa Express train ride might also be cancelled. The goal is to have train rides up and running full-time in February. The Mid-Continent Railway Museum has set up a flood relief fund.
