Donations For Abused Boy Top $10,000

Boy Was Found In Portage House

UPDATED: 7:44 am CDT June 28, 2007

The community effort to help an abused 11-year-old boy found in a Portage home is taking off, according to organizers.

Donations of money, a new bed and a weekend resort stay are just part of the community effort to help the boy, who was found this month hiding in a closet at the rented home in Portage where he was apparently abused.

Various news reports of the case have brought an outpouring of concern for the boy. Donations now total more than $10,500. Simmons Mattress Co. in Janesville plans to donate a bed, and a Madison law firm, Axley Brynelson, is offering him a weekend stay at Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells, WISC-TV reported.

The donations campaign is being spearheaded by Portage Cares, a fundraising effort organized by the Portage Daily Register.

"We don't want to get in a situation where there's competing interest. There are a lot of worthwhile causes out there to give money to, but this was something that people came to us and asked us to do," said Jason Maddux, editor of the Portage Daily Register.

The boy remains in treatment at University of Wisconsin Hospital.

Beyond the boy's discovery, authorities also found his mother buried in the yard. Four people are now charged with being party to her killing and to the abuse inflicted on the boy, which included burns all over his body from boiling water and injuries from serial beatings. His extensive injuries are documented in the criminal complaint filed last week in Columbia County Circuit Court.

Meanwhile, the head of Florida's child welfare agency said that it will add five child locator specialists in response to a missing 2-year-old girl who was also found living in the Portage home.

The search for Courtney Clark was what initially led police to the home. Authorities said that the girl was abducted by her non-custodial mother from a foster home last year.

The girl was missing for four months before police began looking for her, officials said.

In related news, the Portage Daily Register reported this week that a separate fundraising effort led by the boy's aunt in Florida has stopped raising money because Portage police raised concerns about it.

Police notified authorities in Collier County in Florida that statements that Becky Garlin made about the efforts might be misleading, the newspaper reported. A Portage police lieutenant told the newspaper that Garlin solicited money for the boy's medical bills, but since the child is under state care, the family isn't responsible for the costs of his hospitalization.

Garlin told the paper on Tuesday that she wasn't raising money for the boy's medical expenses, but to assist him after he's released from the hospital. She was quoted as saying that she was upset that Wisconsin authorities haven't said what will happen to the child after his release.

The paper reported that Garlin told a TV reporter in a story that aired on Sunday that their fundraising efforts were "to keep him on machines." She told the paper police asked her to stop raising money.
