MADISON, Wis. -- In the wake of the tragic bridge collapse in the Twin Cities, many are taking a closer look at how bridges are rated in Wisconsin.
INTERACTIVE: Bridges State By StateAccording to a report by MSNBC, there are 13,687 bridges in Wisconsin and there are 1,460 bridges in the state categorized as structurally deficient. This means the bridge is closed or restricted to light vehicles because of its deteriorated structural components.Bridges in this category have a "D" rating.About 800 bridges are considered functionally obsolete. That means the bridge has older design features and can't safely accommodate current traffic volume. Bridges in this category have been given an "O" rating.A bridge's sufficiency to remain in service is obtained by calculating the structural adequacy and safety, serviceability, essentiality for public use and special reductions. A sufficiency rating value of 100 represents an entirely sufficient bridge; a rating of 0 is considered a deficient bridge, WISC-TV reported. Some of the lowest-rated obsolete bridges in Dane County include a bridge on Missouri Road, west of Highway 89, a bridge over Lake Monona north of Highway MC, a bridge on Highway 30 and 151, and a bridge on Highway 30 and Fair Oaks Avenue.A few of the lowest-rated bridges with a "D," or deficient rating, include a bridge over the Yahara River, south of 151, a Token Creek bridge on Highway 151 east of Highway 51, and a bridge on Starkweather Creek south of Highway 151.To see how the bridges in other counties stand up or others nationally, click here.
