GAYS MILLS, Wis. -- Federal emergency management officials spent the weekend assessing damage in five Wisconsin counties, talking to townspeople and elected officials to gather information needed to officially declare regions that suffered the worst flooding disaster areas.Residents of ravaged Gays Mills in particular said that they have high hopes for help from the federal government, although residents of the Crawford County village said that they are quick to point out that simple financial aid could never erase the damage done."We don't have a lot of money, and everybody looks at how much money was lost. Around here, a dollar value doesn't tell you really what's lost," said Laura Negronida, whose home is flooded with 28 inches of water.Other residents said that they are mindful of the high demand for relief dollars and are skeptical about their chances of receiving aid, WISC-TV reported. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said it hopes to finish the first five state-declared counties by the end of the weekend. Their reports will go to Gov. Jim Doyle, then to FEMA agents in Washington, and ultimately to President George W. Bush, who will decide how much -- if any -- federal aid to grant.Meanwhile, as FEMA makes its assessment, the Salvation Army asked for volunteers to help both flood victims and disaster relief crews. The organization is taking donations for items such as paper plates, plastic silverware, paper towels, and trash bags. Those interested in either signing up as a volunteer or dropping off a donation should go to the Salvation Army office at 630 East Washington Ave.The Salvation Army said there is no immediate need for food or clothing items.
