Big Ten Network Launches Without Cable Deal

Network Available In UW Residence Halls

UPDATED: 11:26 am CDT August 31, 2007

The new Big Ten Network launched Friday night, but many Badgers fans in the area won't be able to view it because a deal didn't come together with cable companies.

There is no deal in place for the network to have a home on Charter Cable. The Big Ten Network wants to be part of the extended cable lineup, but Charter wants to put the network in the sports tier option, meaning that only those who want it will get it.

Ryan Mcasey, a sophomore at University of Wisconsin-Madison, said he is excited to be able to watch the Big Ten Network from the comfort of his dorm.

"I was pretty pumped. I mean, I get all the information that the Big Ten sees, not just the Badgers, but what the Big Ten schools are up to and how were going to destroy them," Mcasey said.

The new network will be available in all of UW-Madison's residence halls.

"I think it's a great way to start them here as Badgers and get them excited about that, even if they can't go and participate in Camp Randall or the Kohl Center. I do think it's an important part of the college experience," said Paul Evans, director of UW-Madison housing.

While students tune in during their study breaks, experts said that both the network and Charter Cable will keep an eye on the demand.

"This is all about money, and it's all about who gets what portion of money. There's no question that money's going to be spent for this stuff. People are going to watch it and are going to pay for it. The real question now is who gets what piece," said Barry Orton, a telecommunications professor at UW-Madison.

Experts said that it is too early to predict the Big Ten Network's final home in the cable realm.

In football, the network is scheduled to carry the Badgers' game against Citadel on Sept. 15 and possibly two other games.

The real issue will come during the men's basketball season where the network is slated to carry nearly a third of those games.
