UW-Madison Moves Up In Research Rankings

Chancellor Says School Is Maintaining Competitiveness

UPDATED: 11:11 am CST November 8, 2007

University of Wisconsin-Madison is moving up in the national research rankings.

The National Science Foundation said that the university moved up a spot to become the No. 2 research school in science and engineering.

The statistics show the university spent $832 million in those fields in fiscal year 2006. That was enough to surpass the University of Michigan.

UW-Madison is also the leading U.S. research university in fields outside of science and engineering. The university spent $73 million in education, business and the humanities.

Chancellor John Wiley said that the rankings show the university is maintaining its competitiveness.

The rankings are based on spending from federal, state and private research grants.
