Judge Hears Testimony In Portage Torture, Slaying Case

Boyfriend, Girlfriend Accused Of Killing Woman, Torturing Boy

UPDATED: 8:42 am CDT April 29, 2008

A Columbia County judge heard testimony on Monday in a hearing related to a man and woman who are accused of killing a woman and torturing her son.

Michael Sisk, 26, and his girlfriend, Candace Clark, 24, are accused of torturing a then-11-year-old boy and killing his mother, Tammie Garlin, last summer in the house they shared in Portage. Sisk and Clark each face multiple charges that include being a party to first-degree intentional homicide, child abuse and false imprisonment.

The judge heard testimony from Clark and an officer, but made no decision on whether to suppress her statements made following her June 2007 arrest in Portage.

Clark said that she was confused from a lack of diabetes medication, food and water when she told Portage police about what happened to the victims. She said that she hadn't understood she had a right to speak with a lawyer, and that what she said during those initial interviews with police could be held against her at trial.

Judge Alan White plans to listen to recordings of the three interviews before deciding whether Clark's statements can be used during her jury trial scheduled in July.

Investigators said Sisk and Clark led a group of scam artists across the country. Authorities said that they used false names and stolen identities to run financial scams.

Last June, police said they discovered the boy locked in a closet with burns all over his body in a home the group rented in Portage. Officers also found the body of the boy's mother buried in a shallow grave behind the house.

Monday's hearing was also decide whether to change venue and have separate trials.

Last March, another woman who was arrested along with Sisk and Clark, 21-year-old Michaela Clerc, pleaded no contest to being party to false imprisonment, mayhem, causing a child mental harm and physical child abuse. Clerc was accused of helping whip and burn the boy and helping stuff him in a closet naked and malnourished.

Garlin's teenage daughter is being prosecuted as a juvenile.
