GAYS MILLS, Wis. -- Rising floodwaters forced about 139 Gays Mills residents to evacuate for precautionary reasons on Monday, which is almost a quarter of the population. The village, located in Crawford County, had one day's warning before the flood.Around 60 volunteers helped place sandbags on Sunday to help control the water. This disaster marks the second time Gays Mills has been flooded in less than one year, which has some residents wondering who will come back once the water goes down?"I'm really concerned about it," said Gays Mills Village President Larry McCarn. "How many people will stay or even come back? With the businesses, what will happen to them?"McCarn said the flood this time is worse than in 2007. He said he hasn't seen the village this flooded since 1978.
