GAYS MILLS, Wis. -- Residents of the small village of Gays Mills in western Wisconsin are tallying damage from the most recent round of flooding.Again, as they did last August, people are traveling by boat instead of cars down Main Street.Village president Larry McCarn said that this flood is worse. Homes further from the Kickapoo River that stayed dry last August, now have flooded basements. Many in the village of 625 are still rebuilding from that August flood, which affected about 75 homes.McCarn said that the frustrating irony is that just last week the village board approved a study by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to find ways to prevent future floods.McCarn said that Gays Mills has also earmarked money to buy out some of the homeowners who live in the most flood prone areas of the village and raze the houses.
