Rock County Residents Prepare For Rising Water
River Expected To Crest This Weekend

AFTON, Wis. -- As water continues to rise on the Rock River, residents and Rock County officials are keeping a close watch on the river in the Newville and Afton areas.
VIDEO: Watch The ReportThe Rock River isn't expected to crest until late this weekend, when record water levels will likely cause the third significant flood in the past six months along the river.According to the Rock County Sheriff's Department, the last major flood there was in 1993, when the river reached 12.2 feet.By Sunday, the Rock River at Newville is expected to rise to 13.7 feet.Floods in January and March of this year have helped prepare county officials to handle rising water. They've formed guidelines for what roads need to be closed and when, as water rises."It spells out a pretty good plan, based on the information we have up to this point, of how we're going to respond to it. Our shift supervisor is out there currently monitoring it, and that helps also, but we are looking at reaching levels that we haven't seen yet," said Troy Knudson, commander at the Rock County Sheriff's Office.County officials met Tuesday to plan for the weekend. Sand and bags are available at Milton and Rock town halls.Although officials said Rock River is forecasted to crest late Sunday, major flooding could occur as early as Friday afternoon.
