Comcast Cable And Big Ten Network Strike Programming Deal

Deal Could Open Way For Other Providers

UPDATED: 2:00 pm CDT June 20, 2008

Wisconsin sports fans may soon be able to watch Badger football and basketball games that are aired on the Big Ten Network as it has reached a deal with Comcast Cable.

The agreement between the two companies could open the door for local cable providers to carry the Big Ten Network.

A telecommunications expert told WISC-TV that the network could be shown here soon.

"The theory is that the Comcast deal will break the log jam and soon (the network will) have a deal with Time Warner and then Charter and we’re in Charter territory,” said Bary Orton, a University of Wisconsin telecommunications professor.

Currently there is no word on a deal between the network and Charter, WISC-TV reported.

Comcast will start carrying the channel on Aug.15

The Big Ten Network now reaches 35 million homes.
