A man was arrested on suspicion of robbing a Madison bank on Thursday morning in which police said he claimed that he had a bomb.

The incident occurred at the Badger Campus Credit Union on Spring Street when the man apparently entered the bank and demanded money, according to Madison police

Police said the man entered the building around noon and Royce Walker entered as the man was leaving.

Credit union staff yelled at Walker that the man had just robbed the bank, so Walker started running after him. Walker said the chase went on for a few blocks and he was finally able to flag police down to make an arrest, WISC-TV reported.

"As I walked in, I opened the door to let a guy out," said Walker. "When I let him out, one of the bank people said, 'we were just robbed -- that guy just robbed us.'"

"He had two bags -- he had a plastic bag and a paper bag. And he told me he had a bomb in one of them, but he kept dropping it," said Walker. "So I told him, 'that's alright. I'll just keep following you.'"

"I chased him down and until he couldn't run anymore and I gave him an alternative: you walk out and give yourself up, or I was going to tackle you and haul you out," said Walker.

University of Wisconsin police arrived shortly thereafter and arrested the suspect.

Police took the suspect into custody without incident.

A Department of Corrections spokesman said the suspect was released from prison two days ago, to a halfway house. He was serving a sentence for armed robbery and went missing from the halfway house Wednesday, WISC-TV reported.

Walker said he's been a longtime customer of the credit union and he was worried about the staff.

"I know these ladies in the bank. I've been banking here for a long time," said Walker. "So I right away took it into action and wanted to help out my bank."
