Man Arrested After Allegedly Driving Car Into Lake Mendota

MADISON, Wis. -- A man is in custody after allegedly driving his car into Lake Mendota early Wednesday morning.Jeremiah J. Hoefle, 20, of Waunakee, has been arrested and tentatively charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, reckless driving and underage consumption of alcohol off a licensed premise.Police responded to North Lake Street and Lake Mendota at 1:50 a.m. after receiving information that a car had just driven into the water. An officer discovered a 1999 Buick Century about 75-feet from the shoreline.The officer could see about two feet of the rear of the car which was still above water.According to a police department press incident report, a man wearing wet clothes approached the officer and said this was his fault, and that he 'must have taken a wrong turn.' "The driver said he was not injured and was able to swim to shore.A motorcyclist told officers the car had nearly hit him at the corner of State and Lake streets just before it entered the lake, according to the police department report.The driver said that he was alone in the car but the Dane County Sheriff's Department Dive team was called in to make sure no one else was in the car — no one was.
