Nearly 300 Rock County Homes Damaged By Flooding

80 Homes May Need To Come Down

UPDATED: 8:18 pm CDT August 14, 2008

As many as 80 homes in Rock County may have to be torn down following the summer's flooding.

Rock County planning officials said about 300 Rock County properties had some flood damage.

Right now they are working with property owners to determine the severity of that damage.

If a home has more than 50 percent damage and it's in a floodway, it can not be rebuilt, WISC-TV reported.

So far, four homes will be torn down.

"Those individuals are primary residences and they have the opportunity to work with us to apply for hazard mitigation, for the acquisition and demolition of their structure," said Scott Heinig, the planning and development director for Rock County.

County officials urge residents to apply for aid soon. Federal Emergency Management Agency funding will be divided between homes in all 30 Wisconsin counties declared as disaster areas.
