WHITEWATER, Wis. -- Whitewater police said a man in a motorized wheelchair was injured when he was struck by a car while crossing a street on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus Tuesday afternoon.Police said the 23-year-old victim, a recent UW-Whitewater graduate, was transported to Fort Atkinson Hospital and subsequently taken by MedFlight to University Hospital in Madison. As of Wednesday morning, the man was listed in critical condition.Witnesses told police that the man was crossing in the crosswalk at the intersection of West Main Street and South Whiton Street when he was struck by the vehicle. Police said it appears the driver's view of the pedestrian was blocked by another vehicle that was turning. The collision occurred in front of the UW-Whitewater Alumni Center and near the Anderson Library.Police said that although overhead crossing lights were recently installed at the intersection, witnesses said the yellow warning lights were not activated at the time of the crash.Police said they are still investigating and that the driver will likely be cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
