Some Rock County Residents Raise Homes In Wake Of Flooding

Rock County Suffered Severe Flooding

UPDATED: 8:21 pm CDT August 27, 2008

Dozens of houses in Rock County were severely damaged by this summer's flooding but some residents are choosing to rebuild.

Residents living along the Rock River, just south of Janesville, experienced three significant floods within seven months starting with an ice jam in January, spring flooding from a record snowfall and flooding in June.

Still, some are refusing to give up their homes and are going to great heights to stay.

"It wasn't until the 13th of June, Friday the 13th, that things started looking pretty bleak," said flood victim Caroline Robb.

Currently, the Rock River sits well below South River Road but just two months ago Robb's home was under a foot of water. That won't happen again.

"My grandson is going to be calling it 'grandma's tree house,' " said Robb. "It will be really different, but we'll be thankful to have it up and not be worried so much about the river coming up and destroying things again."

In order to rebuild, the Robbs' home has been lifted nearly five and a half feet.

It will sit atop a new foundation currently under construction.

"Its going to give me a whole new view of the river," said Robb , with a laugh.

Just next door, RJ Hallett is preparing another home to be lifted, using hydraulic jacks.

"You have to set a network of steel beams in the proper places in order to support the building correctly, and then push it up in the air with the jacks," said Hallett.

It's a painstakingly slow process, but necessary. Without elevating the house to a higher level, it would remain in the flood plain or fringe, WISC-TV reported.

Robb said it's worth it if it means preserving the home that's been in her husband's family for decades.

"You know, you can replace some things. Thankfully we won't have to replace our home," said Robb.

So far, these are among the first few houses in the county to be lifted. There will be more to come.

Hallett said he already has received interest from other homeowners along the same road.

Though he has lost count of the number of people he's had to turn away, there just simply isn't enough time to get to them all, WISC-TV reported.
