Madison Police Chief's Son Arrested
No Formal Charges Filed Yet

MADISON, Wis. -- A son of Madison Police Chief Noble Wray was arrested on a tentative charge of felony theft.
VIDEO: Watch The ReportThere are few details about the circumstances of the arrest, but WISC-TV confirmed that the Madison police chief's older son, Brent Wray, 24, was taken into custody by Milwaukee police Thursday morning.Milwaukee police said Brent Wray was in the Milwaukee County Jail Friday on suspicion that he stole money from a children's museum in Milwaukee.But officials said Brent Wray was released Friday night at about 9 p.m., pending a formal charge.A Milwaukee County assistant district attorney said he expects to file a formal charge next month. The district attorney's office said it's waiting for reports from the Milwaukee Police Department.Police said they believe Brent Wray stole $15,000 from the Betty Brinn Children's Museum. Milwaukee police said they believe he had been skimming cash from the register for several months.According to the Betty Brinn Children's Museum Web site, Brent Wray worked there as a visitor assistant in 2006 and 2007. It's not clear if he was still employed there when he was taken into custody. Museum officials would only say they had no comment out of respect for the privacy of their staff.The 13-year-old nonprofit museum was started to serve underprivileged children and their families. Last year, it raised half of its revenue through donations.No formal charge had yet been filed against Brent Wray. He appears to have no prior criminal record.He's one of two sons the Madison police chief has with his wife. Noble Wray has been Madison's chief law enforcement officer since 2004.Just this month, Chief Noble Wray was featured in Madison Magazine as its "Person of the Year." The article featured Noble Wray's upbringing in Milwaukee, his work and his family, including his wife, a 21-year-old son, and Brent.WISC-TV was unable to reach Noble Wray for comment.
