MADISON, Wis. -- A wintery mix of snow and sleet made the Thanksgiving trek home hazardous for thousands across the state on Sunday.Carmen Valdez said that she flew back to Madison from snow-packed Breckenridge, Colo., where she spent almost at much time on the ground as she did in the air."Then, there was a long lane for all the planes to be de-iced then waiting to take off so waited a total about two and a half hours on the plane," said Valdez.Wisconsin State Patrol troopers and dispatchers kept their eyes on the roads all day."Slow down," said Trooper Nathan Henriksen. "Leave enough following distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. When you're making corners, slow down.""I knew it was going to be snowing," said Valdez. "But I’m just glad it's not as bad here as it was there."The Wisconsin State Patrol dispatch center was fully staffed on Sunday night.Salt trucks were out on roads throughout the Madison area.Authorities advised drivers to leave early on Monday in order to allow enough time to get to work or school without speeding. The city of Madison hasn't declared a snow emergency, but Stoughton has. The emergency goes into effect at midnight and means that Stoughton residents must follow the emergency parking rules.
