DNR: Deer Hunt Third Safest In State History
Nine-Day Hunt Ended Sunday

WAUSAU, Wis. -- Officials with the state Department of Natural Resources said that there were nine accidental shootings during this year's deer hunt, making it the third safest on record.Safety administrator Tim Lawhern said that the nine-day hunt that ended Sunday claimed one hunter's life -- a 48-year-old Appleton man -- and left eight others with a variety of wounds, four of them self-inflicted in the leg or foot.The past 10 seasons have averaged 15 accidental shootings.Lawhern said that the nine victims this year were all males, ages 13 to 62. Five of shootings occurred during deer drives.Exactly how many deer were killed by the more than 630,000 hunters won't be known until Tuesday. Hunters have until late Monday to register deer with the DNR.
