Semi Smashes Into I-94 Bridge Near Johnson Creek; Driver Killed

Switzke Road Bridge Closed Indefinitely

UPDATED: 7:28 pm CST December 4, 2008

A semitrailer left Interstate 94 near Johnson Creek, skidded across the ground and crashed into the abutment for a freeway overpass, leaving the semi's tractor unit crushed against the concrete and killing the driver Thursday.

The crash reported just before 3 p.m. Thursday caused a traffic backup that extended for miles in the westbound lanes. It continued for hours after a single lane of slow-moving traffic was allowed to pass as crews worked to remove the semitrailer.

The Wisconsin State Patrol said the driver was killed. His name was withheld pending notification of relatives.

The State Patrol said the Switzke Road bridge over I-94 sustained structural damage and will be closed indefinitely.

The State Patrol said the interstate westbound is closed from Highway 67 to Highway 26. Authorities said the roadway is expected to be open by 10 p.m. Thursday.

The Wisconsin State Patrol is investigating the crash.
