Anyone who has ever gone to Rhythm and Booms can tell you that, every year, you have to dodge construction areas.

This year a stretch of highway north of Madison is closed to traffic and that could cause even more than the usual traffic fireworks.

Rhythm & Booms will be at Warner Park on Saturday. The colorful display of fireworks set to music is expected to attract 250,000 people -- 50,000 vehicles to Madison.

Despite that volume, North District Police Capt. Mike Masterson was optimistic. "The road construction that is going on is probably no different than the road construction we've seen in the past years," he told News 3.

He expects 220 police officers to be on hand for traffic control.

Construction around County Highway CV at Highway 51, and East Washington Avenue will make driving those routes a challenge. But the heaviest traffic will likely be on Highway 113, because a section from County Road M to Highway 19 there is closed.

City Traffic Engineer told News 3 that the most troublesome part will be near Waunakee, because of a detour. Traffic will be diverted from Highway 113 to Highway K to Q, on the saouth side of Waunakee.

People that's going to Middleton or the west side of Madison should use the Isthmus, or Highway 51 and the beltline as an alternative, he said.

The isthmus is torn up for blocks around East Washington right now, but engineers said this route has provided the least headaches in the past.

"The Isthmus routes have moved very smoothly and without much delay at all," Walsh said.

Drivers should also be aware that traffic on County Highway CV will only be "one way" after the fireworks -- all the way to Highway 51. Asst. Madsion Fire Chief Carl Saxe urged drivers to stay cool and be smart.

"We've got to stress to the drivers, please use a lot of common sense. And please have a lot of patience," he said.

Madison Metro will provide shuttle services from Madison Area Technical College at Truax, and Hill Farms.
