MADISON, Wis. -- A proposal to build a new Whole Foods grocery store at Hilldale Shopping Center was defeated late Tuesday night by a single vote. The Madison City Council defeated the plan to build the organic grocery store by a vote of 10-9.The council's problem with the proposal stems from the planned parking lot for the 50,000-square-foot store. One area business owner said that the big-box-style store doesn't fit in the neighborhood, WISC-TV reported."What they're proposing is just parking and a building, and that's really what the neighbors have been objecting to, that's our concern, too," said Tim Metcalf, owner of Sentry Foods.Prior to the meeting, Bradley Bohlen, marketing director for Whole Foods Market Madison, said that he thought the company's plan would be a good fit in the community."We believe we've designed a parking lot that will fulfill the urbanization," Bohlen said. "It's good use of land in an environmentally friendly nature."The proposed parking lot would be 240 spaces in size. To meet the same ratio as neighboring stores, it would have to cut about 70 spaces, WISC-TV reported.
