SLIDESHOW: Afternoon Pictures Of This Year's Rhythm & BoomsThe always-impressive fireworks show went on Sunday at Madison's Warner Park, although there was one slight hiccup during the show when a premature explosion interrupted the delayed the show for a few minutes, WISC-TV reported.Madison police said that a firework exploded on the ground while still inside its canister, igniting a small fire. The fire was quickly put out, but officials put the show on hold to do routine safety checks, WISC-TV reported. However, the display began again within minutes. The only major issue during this year's event was the fact that Saturday's poor weather delayed the festivities until Sunday. This meant that there were fewer volunteers able to work, resulting in eight concessions stands being shut down, WISC-TV reported. An estimated 140,000 people who attended Sunday left a mess and organizers said that volunteers will be needed to help in the clean up. Officials are asking anyone interested in assisting to visit the community center on Monday morning. In what seemed like déjà vu, volunteers repeated on Sunday what they did on Saturday as they prepared Warner Park for the influx of 150,000 people expected to see the show. Many of those started early in the afternoon, rolling out the blankets to mark the perfect spot.Stacey Strempke of Grapevine, Texas, drove 17 hours to see the fireworks. The trip is something of an annual event for her and she said that she had so much fun on Saturday that she wasn't ready to wait another year."I wanted to do it a second day, I really did," Strempke said. "It's relaxing. The best that I have seen fireworks anywhere, (so) why not? Where else you going to spend a long weekend just relaxing enjoying the leisure?"Another out-of-town visitor was Stanton Olson from Chicago. He said that he's watched for 15 years and he's never had a bad time."Sometimes, leaving you take time a little while, enjoy, not a big deal getting out," Olson said. This year's crowds weren't nearly as large as a traditional Rhythm and Booms but organizer Terry Kelly said that she hoped to see just as many because staffing the rain date isn't free, WISC-TV reported."We'll have lots of extra costs, some $20,000 to $40,000 in extra costs at least," said Kelly, president of the Madison Fireworks Fund. For attendees however, July Fourth spirits were flying high, and in the end the fireworks turned out to be a smashing success. Many said that the show was well worth the wait."Fireworks themselves are great but add the music and it's wonderful," said Madison resident Jeanette Koenig."I can't believe there's another venue in the U.S. as good as this," said Dale Koenig. "It's outstanding."Rhythm & Booms is the largest annual single-day event in Wisconsin. For more information on firework displays in the area, visit Channel 3000's Local Events/Fireworks page.
