Favre Weighing Options

Packers Star Quarterback Seeks To Return To NFL

UPDATED: 4:17 pm CDT August 2, 2008

Brett Favre's agent said that the quarterback knows he'd be walking into a media frenzy if he reports to the Green Bay Packers training camp, but he's still pondering what to do next.

Agent Bus Cook has told the Associated Press that Favre is willing to do that rather than have retirement forced on him.

Favre and the Packers are still at a stalemate over his desire to reverse his retirement.

On Thursday afternoon, the NFL Network reported that Favre had charted a plane and was to be in Green Bay that night but ESPN.com, citing a report from the Green Bay Press-Gazette, said the flight was delayed several times and eventually canceled.

Favre, 38, retired in early March at a tear-filled press conference, but since then he's had the itch to return for a 17th season. The Packers said that they've moved on and Aaron Rodgers is their quarterback.

Favre met on Wednesday with Packers president Mark Murphy in Mississippi, but no final agreement emerged. Murphy reportedly went to speak to the star quarterback and influence him out of reporting to training camp this week.

There are reportedly two possible solutions to the impasse. The Wisconsin State Journal and ESPN are reporting the Packers have offered Favre a 10-year, $20 million marketing deal if he stays retired.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said a potential marketing contract for Favre could offer both the star quarterback and the team a solution to their standoff over Favre's retirement.

Favre confirmed he was considering the deal to ESPN Thursday.

McCarthy said, "Brett needs to stay a part of football" and that "obviously, he's a part of the Green Bay Packers."

The Green Bay Press-Gazette is reporting that Cook and the Packers are in serious discussion with the New York Jets about a trade.

Meanwhile, NFL commission Roger Goodell delayed his approval of Favre's reinstatement request for a day to try to give him and the Packers time to work things out. Favre faxed his letter requesting reinstatement to the league on Tuesday.

In a statement released on Thursday, the league said, "The Packers and Brett Favre are continuing their discussions. The commissioner preferred to let those discussions continue rather than act on the reinstatement petition today."

Once Favre is reinstated, the Packers will have 24 hours to decide whether to cut him or restore him to their active roster. Favre could also be traded, apparently even to a division rival.

Favre wants to be released from the Packers if he cannot start, something the Packers aren't willing to do.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on Thursday that Packers officials have had internal discussions about trading Favre to the Minnesota Vikings or Chicago Bears as a "last resort" to resolve the smoldering controversy.

Packers general manager Ted Thompson said earlier this week that he wouldn't consider trading Favre to an NFC North competitor.
