GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy and returning quarterback Brett Favre are sitting down to talk Monday about the upcoming season.

TALKBACK: What Do You Think?McCarthy said there have been no promises. Given Favre's track record of waffling on his football future, McCarthy said he first wants to talk to Favre before making any decision on opening the quarterback job up to competition.Favre arrived in Green Bay Sunday to report to the Packers training camp. He could be on the field as early as Tuesday. It's not yet clear what role Favre will play once he reports to Lambeau Field, but Aaron Rodgers said he's up for competing against the legendary quarterback. The official word from the organization is that general manager Ted Thompson and McCarthy have a plan for Favre but won't share it publically until later Monday.Favre's reinstatement was effective at noon Monday when he was added to the Packers' active roster. The team offered Favre a long-term, multimillion-dollar marketing agreement that likely would have kept him retired. But Favre's decision to report to camp makes such an agreement far less likely.Favre originally announced his retirement in March before having second thoughts. The Packers elevated Rodgers to the top of the depth chart, and head coach Mike McCarthy had insisted that Rodgers would be his No. 1 signal-caller even if Favre returned.
Vikings Coach Says Team Hasn't Talked About Trade
Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress said that his team hasn't had contact with the Packers regarding a potential trade for Favre.Childress dismissed a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that said the Packers have made preliminary contact with the Vikings about Favre. He was reinstated on Monday.Green Bay has filed tampering charges against the Vikings for alleged inappropriate contact between the Vikings coaching staff and Favre this summer. Childress said he had no update on the outcome of that investigation.Stay tuned to WISC-TV and Channel 3000 for continuing coverage.
