Big 10 Network Now Airing On Charter

Businesses Weigh In On Deal

UPDATED: 8:51 pm CDT August 28, 2008

Charter Cable subscribers should have Big 10 Network on their TVs by now, and that means fans will be able to see Saturday's University of Wisconsin football game.

A charter spokesman said crews worked around the clock to get it online, and it was scheduled to premiere by 5 p.m.

"When they had an agreement with Comcast -- basically the line is set, this is what the price is going to be, you're not going to get a better deal than Comcast and that's the deal you'll get -- I think it made it easier for everyone else," said UW Athletic Director Barry Alvarez.

The Big 10 Network on Charter Cable is on channel 73 or on high-definition channel 795; however, Saturday's game against Akron is not being produced in HD.

But the big question is, what does that mean for businesses who cashed in on the Big Ten Network-Charter stalemate?

Boston's in Middleton was one of the handful of places that carried those Big Ten Network-exclusive games.

Its sports bar saw a $2,000 increase in revenue when UW games were on the Big Ten Network, WISC-TV reported.

Still, business owners aren't worried about the possible drop in business.

"We're all Badger fans; we're going to watch the game regardless. We'll still be a great destination to watch the game. Are we going to feel a little bit of a hit? I think so, maybe a little," said Joe Burdick, Boston's owner.

"I don't think there will be a huge drop in it, but yeah, I bet there will be a little bit of people saying, 'Now I can watch it at home; that's awesome,'" said Casey Bauer, a Big Ten football fan.
