MADISON, Wis. -- September's traffic deaths were the lowest since World War II, according to preliminary statistics from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.Fifty people died last month in traffic crashes. The lowest September traffic death total came in 1943 with 32 fatalities. In September 2007, 82 people were killed.According to a DOT news release, as of the end of September, 453 people have died in 416 Wisconsin traffic crashes. Traffic deaths through September are down 117 -- about a 20 percent reduction -- compared with the same period in 2007 and down 129 compared with the five-year average.
