Last year was a good year for to Wisconsin tourism.

Travel spending figures released on Monday by the state Department of Tourism show tourism spending was up more than 7 percent to $12.8 billion.

The department said that the boost was fueled by an increase in state marketing funds.

Milwaukee County led all counties in tourism spending at $1.6 billion, up 7.6 percent over last year -- followed by Dane County and then Sauk County.

Wisconsin tourism officials said that the jump in traveler spending is the biggest increase since 2000.

Travel spending includes hotel rooms, meals, gas, entertainment and other items. A consulting firm from Maine measured spending for the department.

Higher spending comes after the tourism department got a 21 percent increase in its marketing budget from the Legislature.
