Travel Faster Through Dane County Regional Airport

There's a new way to check in and out of the Dane County Airport, and it could potentially get passengers to their flight in half the time.

Airport officials recently unveiled the second to last phase of the airport's modernization.

The changes have passengers flying through check points.

"I thought it was efficient before and now it looks like it's a lot more efficient," said passenger Glenn Gardner.

"Pretty fast," said Steve Travers. "It's easy to get in and out."

Part two of the $60 million airport construction finished the week of April 19.

"It looks nicer," said Andrew Meister. "I don't know how much faster but the security line is shorter."

Passengers say an average of 15 minutes shorter.

Transportation security officials said the new security check points have travelers waiting only two to five minutes in line instead of 15 to 20 minutes.

"It's much roomier so we can see the crowd right in front of us and we can adjust our personnel manning here to be able to open up one to three lanes depending on what we see in front of us," said Lou Traverzo.

During construction passengers would stand in overcrowded lines at the North end of the airport.

Now the 1.6 million passengers that pass through Dane County's Airport can take the new glass escalators up at the South end or hang out downstairs.

Traverzo said at the airport's busiest travel times the longest passengers will have to wait is five minutes.

"For the passengers they ought to be relatively unnoticeable," said Traverzo. "The only thing they ought to notice is no problems and no hassles."

The real test of the new security checkpoints will come around Memorial weekend and UW's graduation when the airport is flooded with people coming in, but officials are confidant short lines will continue.

The entire construction project should be completed by December.
